Tutor Job Description (Revised June 22, 2011)

* What:  Volunteer tutors teach reading, writing, and speaking English to adults.

* Why:   To help native English speakers acquire or improve their English skills (Adult Basic Literacy) or to help non-English speakers improve their skills (English as a Second Language.)

* Training:  LCBC trains its volunteer tutors using 4 on-line courses (4.5 hours or less) and 4.5 hours of class here at our office.  Our tutor trainer is certified by ProLiteracy America.

* Hours:  Ideally, our tutors meet with their students twice a week for 1.5 hours.  We match students and tutors based on mutually agreeable times of the day/week to meet.  

* Where: Tutors and students meet in rooms at LCBC in Bentonville, LCBC at CFN in Rogers, or at the Rogers, Bentonville, or Bella Vista Public libraries.  

* Instructional materials:  All materials are provided to tutors and students free of charge.

* Responsibilities:

- Tutors report their class hours to LCBC each Friday by recording them in the book at LCBC or LCBC at CFN, or by filling out a form on line.

- For evaluation, tutors note students’ progress, goals, achievements, milestones, and report these to LCBC.

- Tutors help the students develop confidence and a positive attitude toward learning by affirming their progress.

- Tutors show respect for the students by listening, and involving them in decisions about the learning process.

- Tutors are positive, not critical.

- Tutors come prepared with lessons.

- Tutors seek to understand the psychological, emotional, and physical problems that may cause a student to have difficulty learning to read.

- Tutors know that Literacy Changes Lives!
