Tutors
How old do I need to be to volunteer as a tutor?
You must be at least 18 years of age to volunteer as a Tutor.
Do I need teaching experience or certification?
No. You do not need prior teaching experience, certification, or knowledge of a student’s primary language.
What qualities are you looking for in volunteer tutors?
We welcome volunteers who have a spirit of service, a sense of commitment, and a genuine interest in helping students from many different backgrounds and nationalities.
Will I receive training?
Yes. All tutors are required to attend an initial two-hour group training session. This session includes:
- An overview of our organization’s history and mission
- Instruction in tutoring methodologies
- A review of the free teaching materials and resources you will use
- A walkthrough of our in-house and online resources
- Time for questions
- A tour of our office
Do you provide teaching materials?
Yes. We provide all teaching and resource materials at no cost to you.
How does the matching process work?
After you complete training, we match you with a student based on your interests, availability, and the student’s goals. You and your student will then attend a “Meet and Greet” session to review expectations, ask questions, and set up your meeting schedule.
How much time should I plan to volunteer?
We suggest—though it is not required—that tutors commit to meeting approximately three hours per week, typically 1.5 hours twice a week, to help students achieve their English language goals.
